The Cocuy is a Colombian municipality of the province capital of Gutierrez in the department of Boyaca. It is also called "Snowy City, Haven of Peace." The architectural style of the town is republican and colonial type, with some paved streets, and retain their style homes which were built in order to preserve, restore, conserve and improve the rational use of public spaces and private.

The National Park Cocuy is a strategic ecosystem and it is the maximum height of the Colombian eastern Andes, the Blanco Ritacuba peak (5,330 m). The Nevado of about 3% of the total area of NNP Cocuy (306,000 acres) has more than 20 snow peaks, glacial lakes, deserts, flora and fauna characteristic of the Andean forest.
The main snow-capped peaks stand out: Ritacuba White, Black Ritacuba, Concave, Sugar Loaf, El Castillo, El Toti, San Pablin North, South San Pablin, Portals, The Diamond and The Devil's Pulpit. Gaps are: The Greens, Laguna Grande de la Sierra, La Isla, Plaza, El Avellanal and Lagunillas (Painted, Square, Stop and Crossed).
The area has pockets of rainforest cold floor, moor, and floor superpáramo snow, enormous wealth of flora in virgin state. Strategic Ecosystem Study Nicolas Roa (1998), includes the PNN Cocuy within the category of Strategic Ecosystems whose function is to maintain the basic ecological balance and wealth of natural heritage, it also considers a highly fragile ecosystem pedological, geological and geomorphological and soon intervened.
Recommendations:
Carry equipment for climbing and camping in the mountains, insulation, sleeping bag and cold weather clothing. Transite trails only authorized and accompanied by an official or specialized in high mountain guide. Do not hike alone. Do not leave the group and be aware of your peers.
